Winchester Repeating Arms is a hunting and archery brand headquartered in Morgan, Utah. It was founded in 1866.
Winchester's mailing address in Morgan is 275 Winchester Avenue. That is also the address of the old Winchester factory in New Haven, Connecticut, where the firm settled in 1870 and had more than 600 employees by 1887.
Oliver Winchester founded the Winchester Repeating Arms Company in 1866, and its Model 1873 became known as the Gun That Won the West. The firm went into receivership in 1931 and was bought by the Western Cartridge Company, a forerunner of Olin. In January 2006 the New Haven plant closed after 140 years of building Winchester rifles and shotguns.
That August, Olin licensed the Winchester name for rifles and shotguns to Browning, which runs its business from Morgan. In 2008 the Morgan company brought back the full Winchester Repeating Arms name. Olin still owns the brand and sells Winchester ammunition under it. The guns are built by FN in South Carolina and Portugal, and by Miroku in Japan, not in Utah.
The factories are on three continents now. The return address in Morgan kept the old house number.
Before he built an arms company, Oliver Winchester got his start in business as a maker of men's shirts.
