Casper's Ice Cream is a food and drink brand founded in Richmond, Utah, in 1925.
Casper's Ice Cream makes more than 360,000 ice cream bars and sandwiches a day in Richmond, Utah. The first batch fit in a milk can. In 1925 Casper Merrill made nut sundaes on a stick from his family's milk and cream, freezing them with ice blocks and brine. He loaded them into a 10-gallon milk can and took them by wagon to a Fourth of July celebration.
He called them Casco Nut Sundaes. The FatBoy sandwich followed, and the vanilla one is still the top seller. The company says its products run larger than a lot of the competition's. Many ice cream makers have moved to high-temperature short-time pasteurization, but Casper's has stuck with vat pasteurization for its whole history.
Growth took a while. By the 1970s the business had maxed out just shy of $1 million a year. The founder's grandson, Paul Merrill, took over in the early 2000s, and sales went from $22 million in 2014 to $35 million in 2016. In January 2022 the New York private equity firm MidOcean Partners bought Casper's, and it is now the majority owner. Casper's is still run from Richmond, where the first batch went into a milk can.
After J.J. Yeley crashed in FatBoy's 2020 NASCAR sponsorship debut, Casper's sold pieces of the wrecked car signed by Yeley.
