Every Traeger grill sold today crosses an ocean to reach your patio, and the bag of pellets next to it almost certainly did not. Traeger's latest annual report says contract factories in China and Vietnam build its grills, about 80 percent of them in China, while "substantially all" of its consumables, pellets included, are made in the United States. The company is run from Salt Lake City, where it moved its headquarters from Portland, Oregon, in 2015.

Where are Traeger grills made
Traeger doesn't own a grill factory. Its 2025 annual report says it works with third-party manufacturers on a purchase order basis, under agreements that cover "substantially all of our grills and accessories." The grills come from China and Vietnam. The company's second-quarter report for 2026 repeats the same split, about 80 percent from China, so nothing had moved by the middle of this year.
That reliance shows up in the risk section. Traeger says about half of its sales come from goods imported to the United States from China. In response to tariffs, the company says it has negotiated savings with its manufacturers and raised product prices.
The smart thermometers are a separate story. Traeger bought Apption Labs, the maker of the MEATER wireless meat probe, in July 2021, and its latest quarterly report says MEATER accessories are made in Taiwan.
So a Traeger is not made in Utah. It belongs on the headquartered in Utah list, and the made in Utah list is where to look if the factory matters to you.

Where are Traeger pellets made
In the United States, mostly in Traeger's own mills. The 2025 annual report lists four pellet production facilities, in New York, Oregon, Georgia and Texas. Traeger owns the New York mill and leases the others, and contract manufacturers in the United States and Poland fill in the rest.
The network has shrunk. When Traeger went public in 2021, its prospectus said it operated seven wood pellet production facilities. Traeger's 2026 quarterly filings name "pellet mill consolidation" as one of the cost cuts in a restructuring the company calls Project Gravity.
What goes into the bag has been argued in court. A buyer sued in 2019, saying a customer service rep told him his mesquite pellets were alder or oak with mesquite oil added for flavor. Traeger denied the claims and agreed to a $1.5 million settlement, half of it paid to consumers as coupons, including $3-off pellet coupons for California and Utah customers, the Salem Statesman Journal reported in December 2024.
Where is Traeger headquartered
At 533 South 400 West in Salt Lake City, in the Granary District. The move here started with a man who didn't think much of grills. In the letter he wrote for the 2021 prospectus, Jeremy Andrus said that when Traeger came across his desk in 2013, he "couldn't remember which grill brand sat on my deck." Then he interviewed owners, and by the end, he wrote, "I felt like I was speaking to members of a cult, not owners of a cooking device."
He invested and became CEO in 2014. In September 2015 Traeger moved its headquarters from Portland to the Sugar House neighborhood, with more than 100 employees at the new office and about 30 left in Portland, the Deseret News6 reported. Andrus was the former CEO of Skullcandy, and he told the paper he had been "continually impressed by the strength of Utah's talent pool."
Oregon was where it all began. The Statesman Journal says Joe Traeger founded the company in the Oregon town of Mt. Angel. All of its Oregon operations closed in 2016, according to the same paper. Traeger itself dates the first wood pellet grill to 1987.
In 2020 the state approved a tax credit of up to $882,430 if Traeger added as many as 120 jobs over seven years, tied to the downtown headquarters it now occupies. At the end of 2025 the company reported about 433 full-time employees.

Who owns Traeger
Traeger, Inc. has been publicly traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker COOK since its 2021 IPO, so in theory anyone with a brokerage account owns a sliver. In practice, three investment firms hold most of it. As of April 13, 2026, the company's proxy statement listed the AEA Fund at 24.2 percent and entities tied to the Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan at 17.8 percent. Entities tied to Trilantic Capital Management held 13.0 percent, which brings the three firms to 55 percent.
The stock has had a hard stretch. In November 2025 the NYSE told Traeger its shares had averaged under $1 for 30 trading days. The company said in February 2026 that it had regained compliance, and it carried out a 1-for-50 reverse stock split in March.
Project Gravity also changed how you buy one. Traeger.com now sends shoppers to retail partners instead of selling grills directly, according to the company's 2026 filings. Traeger also ended its Costco roadshow program of in-store demonstrations.
Is Traeger a Utah company
It is a Utah brand by our definition, because it is run from here. It was not founded here, and its grills are not made here. The fuller version of that distinction is in our guide to buying Utah made, and famous Utah brands covers which household names started in the state.
