St. George, Utah

Atlas Outdoors is a vehicle and trailer brand headquartered in St. George, Utah.

The air compressor on an Atlas Outdoors trailer has a second job. It raises and lowers the suspension, and after a day of airing down on the trail it can pump your tow vehicle's tires back up. The trailers are built in St. George, where the company was already based in 2018, under the name TetonX.

That year New Atlas called TetonX a two-year-old company. Its campers were small then: the Off-Axis weighed 1,350 pounds and started at $13,995, and the Jake could weigh as little as 700. One Off-Axis option put a coffeemaker on a slide-out, and it needed a 2,000-watt generator that was not included. Coffee, apparently, was not up for negotiation.

The campers have grown up. The TetonX now weighs just over 3,000 pounds and starts at $64,500, with a pop-top that raises the ceiling to 6 feet 8 inches. The smaller AppalachianX, meant for solo travelers and couples, starts at 2,600 pounds and $59,500.

The frame is the part the company most likes to show off. Two 2-by-5-inch steel tubes run the full length of the TetonX from the tongue to the rear, and every hole for wiring or gas lines is sleeved with a welded tube to keep moisture out, according to a post on the company's blog. The parts are cut on a tube laser and welded locally, and the chassis carries a five-year warranty against manufacturing defects.

The Nomad air suspension puts each wheel on its own trailing arm, with the pivot ahead of the wheel and two shocks on every arm. Each airbag adjusts separately from an onboard control panel, so the trailer can be leveled at camp without a pile of blocks.

Not everything in the online store is made in St. George. The fitted TetonX cover comes from PahaQue Wilderness, and the articulating hitch is a Cruisemaster.

The company keeps a map of trailers it has built recently, so a curious buyer can find one nearby and kick the tires. On some builds those tires are 35 inches tall.

Fun fact

Atlas Outdoors says the TetonX can sleep up to seven people, using bunks and an optional rear-mounted rooftop tent.
