Cobalt Kinetics is a hunting and archery brand founded in Utah in 2014. It is headquartered in St. George, Utah.
Cobalt Kinetics was started by people tired of looking at the same rifle. The company's own history says it grew out of dissatisfaction with "the unending rows of the same black rifle on every gun shop wall across the country." It has built AR-style rifles since 2014, and today they are assembled to order in St. George, Utah.
The difference starts in the upper receiver. Cobalt's receivers are 7075-T6 billet aluminum, and the barrel seats with a reverse threaded nut inside an extended upper, which the company says gives more thread engagement than the usual design. The handguard bolts on with eight screws at four points. Cobalt describes the result as closer to a bolt action than a typical AR "copy/paste" build.
The build is deliberately slow. One gunsmith works on one rifle at a time, and the Cerakote finish is sprayed in house. The company quotes lead times of two to four weeks, which is about how long most of us spend reading forum threads before buying anything.
The company has had a hard stretch. It eased off production in August 2019, and in July 2020 BAQ Defense, which provides training and programs to nonprofits that fight child sex trafficking, bought its holdings. Several key staff would stay on, the new owners said.
Rifles built in house carry what Cobalt calls a Legacy Lifetime warranty, which does not expire for the original owner. The 2025 lineup added a competition rifle, the CK-COMP Team. Black is still on the color list, next to Cobalt Green and Flat Dark Earth, so the wall at least has options now.
Cobalt Kinetics' early rifles had two features the company called unique to its guns, the Dual Drop and the Cobalt Advantage Reloading System.
