DoubleTap Ammunition is a hunting and archery brand headquartered in Cedar City, Utah. It was founded in 2002.
DoubleTap Ammunition, loaded in Cedar City, sells a handgun cartridge with two bullets in it. The Equalizer stacks a jacketed hollow point on top of a shorter second bullet. One trigger pull sends both. In Shooting Illustrated's 9mm test the pair landed about an inch apart at 7 yards, and the magazine found the load works best under 10 yards.
Mike McNett started the company in 2002 because nobody was making the high-performance 10mm ammunition he wanted. So he loaded his own, in his garage. American Hunter described him in those days as a 20-something marketing professional, and reported that he "gets physically excited" showing what his loads can do. By 2013 the catalog held 360 loads in more than 70 cartridges.
DoubleTap isn't owned by a bullet maker, so it can use whatever components work best for a load. In 2011 Shooting Illustrated put its prices 10 to 25 percent below comparable loads from better-known brands. McNett still owns the company. The company's own claim is the big one: every round that leaves the Cedar City building has been touched by a hand and inspected by eye. Across 360 loads, somebody in Cedar City has not blinked since 2002.
DoubleTap's first catalog in 2002 listed four loads, all of them 10mm. By 2011 Shooting Illustrated called it the largest volume maker of 10mm ammunition.
