Black Clover is an apparel brand headquartered in Draper, Utah. It was founded in 2008.
In 2024 Black Clover, a hat company whose motto is Live Lucky, signed a 16-year-old amateur golfer named Lucky Cruz. The Golf Wire reported he had won four junior titles in a season with an average round of 68.1. The Draper company said it signed him for his commitment to golf and academics. The name did not hurt.
Black Clover started in 2008. Brett Wayment, a former PGA professional, started it with Craig Labrum, a teammate from the Utah State University golf team, the Salt Lake Tribune reported. The four-leaf clover became the logo, and the brand was built on the idea that luck is a mindset you earn through hard work.
Its first store of its own opened inside the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, which is a confident place to sell a lucky hat. The shop launched a line of hats in leather and cashmere silk blends, and each came with a custom box and a forming pillow to hold its shape. It also sold designs meant, in the company's words, to capture the Las Vegas spirit.
The everyday hat is the Clover 2, which the company calls its number one bestseller. It is a five-panel fitted cap in a sweat-wicking performance fabric with a stretch sweatband, and its product page showed 3,868 reviews in October 2026. The Iron X line uses a headband Black Clover has trademarked as Memory-Fit, which the company says molds to your head.
The brand's own pages say a good deal about mindset and much less about manufacturing. Its about page promises clothing "made from only the finest materials" and leaves it there, while the product pages stick to fabric and fit.
Golf is still home turf. Black Clover lists Korn Ferry Tour players Kyle Stanley and Doc Redman among its partners, and it runs its own stores in Manhattan Beach, California, and The Woodlands, Texas. A company blog post says customers have credited their clover hats for holes in one. The partner list also reaches past golf to boxer Miguel Cotto and Jorge Posada, who played 17 seasons for the New York Yankees.
Closer to home, Black Clover was a platinum sponsor of JamFest 2025, the 3-on-3 basketball tournament former Utah Jazz player Thurl Bailey founded at the Sandy Promenade. The company donated 600 hats for the day. The clover started on a Utah State golf team, and on one August Saturday in Sandy, 600 clover hats went out at a basketball tournament.
Christopher McDonald, who played Shooter McGavin in Happy Gilmore and its 2025 sequel, is a longtime Black Clover customer, the company says.
A classic golf brand and a classic dad hat. Always fun to see one out in the wild.
