Pillow Cube is a home and furniture brand founded in Utah in 2019. It is headquartered in Orem, Utah.
Pillow Cube launched on Kickstarter in 2019 to find out whether anyone would buy it "except for our moms," in the words of founder Jay Davis. The side-sleeper pillow raised $39,805 in 48 hours, with backers as far away as Germany and Australia. Pillow Cube, Inc. now lists its office in Orem, Utah.
Davis ran Creatably, a creative agency in Provo, and he was a side sleeper his whole life who said he hated pillows. He stacked them to get the support he needed. While bedding clients were pitching him, he saw a cube-shaped foam sample and decided to try it as a pillow. The idea had an older source: when he was about 10, the mother of a childhood friend taught him about Japanese pillow boxes.
The shape is the point. A cube fills what the company calls the pillow hole, the 90-degree space between a side sleeper's shoulder and head. Davis told the Daily Herald that his team had been joking about a conspiracy against side sleepers, and that the joking is what led to the cube.
Height matters too. The site's sizing guide starts with a 4-inch Thin for people 5'3" or shorter and a 5-inch Standard for most adults up to 6'3". Anyone taller is pointed to the 6-inch Thick, and Pillow Cube will exchange a pillow that does not align your spine. The foam is viscoelastic polyurethane with carbon fibers, which the company says is CertiPUR-US certified.
The Side Cube Original measures 12 by 24 inches, stands 5 inches tall, weighs about 2.5 pounds and ships compressed, so the site asks buyers to allow 24 to 48 hours for it to expand. The line has since grown to include a cooling Ice Cube, a Combo Cube for people who roll from back to side, Kid Cubes with a No-Fold Middle that the company calls patent pending, and a Knee Cube. The Knee Cube's page says it runs almost the entire length of your legs, "ensuring those sweaty flesh tubes don't touch during the night."
In May 2022 Tamarak Capital, a family investment office in Springville whose majority partners founded the Logan bedding company Malouf, announced a growth investment. Utah Business said the next goals were more retail locations and a stronger online presence. Pillow Cube also sells mattresses now, starting at $1,499.
Pillow Cube does not say where its foam is made. The 2019 original was a 12-inch square priced at $60, and today's Side Cube Original measures 12 by 24 inches and lists at $59.99. That is a lot more pillow for one cent less.
Pillow Cube's 24-month warranty is void if the pillow is stored rather than used, in any orientation.
I'm a pillow snob, and Pillow Cube is one of the few I actually like.
