Wūru Wool is an apparel brand founded in Salt Lake City, Utah, in 2018.
Wūru Wool's first run of ski base layers didn't reach Salt Lake City until late May. "It was 87 degrees outside in Salt Lake, and we finally had all our product for the previous season," Matt Disney said. Even a garment missing its care label had to go back to the Los Angeles factory. So Wūru built its own factory, with four sewing machines and no garment experience.
It began as loose wool. Guides on New Zealand's Milford Track insisted that Matt and his wife, Kathryn, pack lanolin-rich blister wool for their honeymoon hike. Back home, 700 kilograms of New Zealand wool arrived on a pallet in their driveway. Wūru, the Māori word for wool, launched in fall 2018 with $10.95 packs and shipped out of the house for about 18 months.
Since 2022, Wūru says, all of its apparel has been cut and sewn in Salt Lake City. The Salt Lake Tribune placed its production location in Murray. Matt, who still runs it, says a new idea can go from pattern to tested sample within 12 hours.
The blister wool is still for sale, pulled apart like cotton candy and tucked between the toes.
In 2019 Wūru made its blister wool packs 25 percent bigger while cutting the price by 27 percent, crediting partnerships it made in New Zealand.
