Canfield Bikes

Canfield Bikes is a cycling brand founded in Layton, Utah, in 1999. It is now headquartered in Poncha Springs, Colorado.

Canfield Bikes owes something to a broken radio. On a long drive home to Utah from a race in Big Bear, California, Lance Canfield had a lot of time to think about the bike he wanted and couldn't find. Back home he and his brother Chris brought in a local welder, and in 1999 the first Canfield Brothers frames were built in a garage in Layton.

That first bike had 12 inches of travel front and rear, on a high pivot design inspired by trophy truck suspension. The research department was the two brothers racing. Lance rode his own designs in the first four Red Bull Rampages, and Chris chased World Cups around the globe.

Then the company started packing boxes. It moved to Victor, Idaho, and later to Bellingham, Washington, where, after a two-year hiatus to restructure, Lance became sole owner and renamed the brand Canfield Bikes in 2019. Two Colorado towns followed, and since 2024 the company has been based in Poncha Springs, near Salida. The bikes are still made in limited quantities. The return address says Colorado, but the idea is the one that rode home from Big Bear without a radio.

Fun fact

When Canfield moved from Bellingham to Fruita in 2020, Colorado gave it a $60,000 incentive for creating 20 net new jobs.
