Farr's Ice Cream is a food and drink brand founded in Ogden, Utah, in 1920. It is headquartered in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Farr's opened its Ogden ice cream parlor just weeks before the stock market crashed on October 24, 1929, selling a heaping scoop for a nickel. The company says the timing could not have been better. The red brick building at 21st Street and Grant Avenue still scoops, though the ice cream is now made at the family's plant in Salt Lake City.
Before ice cream, the Farrs sold ice. Lorin Farr cut blocks from Ogden mill ponds with special saws, and in their first year his son Asael and Asael's brothers shipped five million pounds of it. Asael and his children incorporated Asael Farr and Sons in March 1920. The ice cream plant came in 1929, and customers insisted it was better than the competition so often that "Farr Better Ice Cream" stuck.
By 2000 the company had outgrown downtown Ogden and bought the Russell's Old Fashioned Ice Cream plant in Salt Lake City. Farr's is sold in 17 states, and the family distributes other makers' ice cream too. Michael Farr runs it with his brothers Darin and Nathan, the fourth generation. Upstairs in the Ogden shop, where the ice cream used to be made, there are tables now.
Burke Mattsson drew Farr's Quality Kid ads, then became a Disney artist who worked on The Jungle Book and The Lion King.
