Outlaw Distillery is a food and drink brand founded in Midvale, Utah, in 2015. It is now headquartered in Tempe, Arizona.
Every piece of equipment in Outlaw Distillery's first plant was built by a diesel mechanic. Kirk Sedgwick spent nearly three decades repairing large diesel engines until, he told CompanyWeek, the job was taking a toll on his body. He and his wife Denise opened in Midvale in January 2015 on less than $90,000 of their own money, and the equipment went together while they waited on permits.
Sedgwick was sick of Utah puns, which he said don't make sense outside the state. He named the place for Butch Cassidy, who was born in Beaver, and for the outlaw trail that ran from Mexico to Canada through Utah. The guy who made the labels worked across the parking lot.
Tyler Halstead bought the company in October 2020, and Sedgwick stayed on to advise. In a field of 550 entrants the Spiced Rum scored 87.33, and Halstead ventured in 2021 that 87-plus put it in the top five rums in America.
In June 2025 Outlaw bought Adventurous Stills in Tempe, Arizona. It now calls Arizona its corporate headquarters. The Utah plant still handles the grain to glass production, though the brand named for a trail to Mexico has drifted south.
By June 2016, Outlaw's bottles were on the shelf in 34 of Utah's 44 state-run liquor stores.
