Salt Lake City, UtahSince 2017

RoHa Brewing Project is a food and drink brand founded in Salt Lake City, Utah, in 2017.

Big Green Couch, a double IPA from RoHa Brewing Project, is named for the couch Chris Haas surfed on while he looked for a brewery to hang his hat. Haas became the Ha in RoHa. Rob Phillips, the Ro, opened the Salt Lake City brewery with him and partner Josh Stern on April 21, 2017, at 30 East Kensington Avenue in the Ballpark neighborhood.

Phillips was an engineer who spent his days off volunteering at Desert Edge Brewery, where Haas worked for 17 years. When Phillips started planning a brewery of his own, Haas asked to join. Haas has since stepped back from daily work and still consults.

The beer is brewed and canned in a 2,000 square foot, 15-barrel brewhouse, which turned out a little more than 2,000 barrels in 2021. Phillips built the plan around distribution, and by early 2022 the cans were in about 500 Utah stores through General Distributing. He has also said distribution taught them how thin the margins are, and the brewery has turned more attention to its taproom, which grew from about 200 square feet to 1,000. The couch did not get a cut.

Fun fact

RoHa reused the malts from its 8.7 percent Nights Out Belgian stout to brew a second beer, a British mild called Mild & Free.
