Uinta Brewing is a food and drink brand founded in Salt Lake City, Utah, in 1993.
"No one thought a Maine boy could have success starting a brewery in the least beer-consuming state in the nation," Will Hamill told Utah Business in 2016. He moved to Salt Lake City in 1992, and in the winter of 1993 Uinta started brewing in a converted mechanic's garage on 1700 South. The business plan aimed for 5,000 barrels by year five.
It hit that number in year two. In 2001 Uinta became the first company in Utah to run on 100 percent wind power, and in 2014 it was the state's biggest brewery, producing 78,000 barrels. Steve Mills, hired as CEO from Boulevard Brewing in 2015, told CompanyWeek the team "would put a tire in a fermenter" if it thought that would make a beer interesting in a good way.
Hamill no longer owns it. Since December 2021 Uinta has belonged to a joint venture of United States Beverage and the Colorado family office Crestone. Its cream ale took gold at the Great American Beer Festival in 2024 and again in 2025. The mechanic's garage on 1700 South has become five acres on Fremont Drive.
Uinta's Dubhe, an imperial black IPA, is named for the Utah Centennial Star.
