Why Utah is good for business, and where it isn't

Why start a business in Utah? A flat 4.45 percent income tax, the youngest workforce in the U.S., Salt Lake shipping reach, and what housing and air cost you.

With a flat 4.45 percent income tax and the youngest population of any state, Utah gives a new brand simple tax math and a deep hiring pool. The state's inland port authority puts northwest Salt Lake City within an 18 hour truck trip of key West Coast ports and 80 million consumers. The bill comes due in housing, where a median home now takes a $147,000 income, and in winter air that on at least one day this January was the worst in the country.

Each figure in the table below comes with the date it covers, since most of them move every year.

Quick answers

What is Utah's income tax rate in 2026?

A flat 4.45 percent for both individuals and corporations, per the Tax Foundation1. SB 60 cut the individual rate from 4.5 percent, retroactive to January 1, 2026.

Is Utah a good state to start a business?

U.S. News ranked Utah the best state overall in 2026, and CNBC ranked it 16th for business. Housing costs and winter air quality are the main drawbacks.

Why do so many companies ship from Salt Lake City?

The Utah Inland Port Authority puts northwest Salt Lake City within an 18 hour truck trip of key West Coast ports and 80 million consumers, with service from both Union Pacific and BNSF.

What is Silicon Slopes?

It is the nickname for the tech cluster along the Wasatch Front, created as a brand campaign by Domo founder Josh James. Its biggest concentration is around Lehi.

What is Utah's income tax rate for businesses?

The Tax Foundation lists Utah's individual and corporate income taxes at a flat 4.45 percent. The Legislature cut the individual rate from 4.5 percent this year with SB 60, which Governor Spencer Cox signed on April 21, 2026, and which applies back to January 1. The Tax Foundation lists the corporate rate at the same 4.45 percent.

For a founder, the useful part is that the rate doesn't care how the company is organized. Profit that passes through an LLC onto a personal return pays 4.45 percent, and so does a C corporation's. There are no brackets to climb as the brand grows.

Flat is not the same as lowest. The Tax Foundation's 2026 State Tax Competitiveness Index puts Utah 15th overall, and the average combined state and local sales tax is 7.19 percent.

The state will also pay for jobs directly. The state approved a tax credit tied to 324 new jobs over seven years at ENVE Composites in Ogden, and Sarah Lehman, ENVE's CEO at the time, said the support would make "on-shoring jobs from Asia and our expansion possible." In 2018 Utah approved incentives for up to 155 new jobs over ten years at the Ogden headquarters that runs Salomon's business in the Americas.

Is Utah's workforce young?

Younger than anywhere else in the country. The Census Bureau's estimates for July 2025 put Utah's median age at 32.6, the lowest of any state, against 39.4 nationally.

The people are also mostly at work. The Department of Workforce Services estimated August 2026 unemployment at 3.5 percent, against 4.1 percent nationally, with 20,600 jobs added over the previous 12 months. For a brand that is hiring, that cuts both ways. Almost everyone you want already has a job, and you will be hiring them away from someone.

Several brands in this directory started while their founders were still in school. In 2012 Kurt Workman was a 23-year-old chemical engineering student at BYU13 when he and a friend who worked at University of Utah Hospital, a lifelong friend with pulse oximetry experience, built a monitor that straps to a baby's foot. His team of six started Owlet, now run from Lehi. Tayson Whitaker started the entrepreneurship club at Southern Utah University, then put $500 of his own money into Outdoor Vitals15 in 2014.

How does Utah rank for business?

It depends on who is ranking. U.S. News named Utah the best state overall in its 2026 Best States list, the fourth year running, with the economy ranked second. In the same list Utah came 48th for natural environment. Evan Comen, a senior data editor at U.S. News, told KSL6 that much of Utah's pollution comes from the "bowl effect you see in the Wasatch Front."

CNBC's 2026 Top States for Business put Utah 16th. The Deseret News reported high marks for the workforce and the economy, and a quality of life score that ranked 45th, sixth from the bottom.

The two 2026 lists put the same state 15 places apart.

What is Silicon Slopes, and does it help a consumer brand?

Silicon Slopes is the nickname for the tech cluster along the Wasatch Front, and Wikipedia credits it to Josh James, founder of the software company Domo, who created it as a brand campaign. The biggest concentration sits in and around Lehi.

Physical products have a foothold there too. Trove Brands, the Lehi company behind the BlenderBottle shaker, relaunched a bottle that had underperformed under the BlenderBottle name as Owala in March 2020, and TIME put the FreeSip on its Best Inventions list three years later. Gabb, also in Lehi, makes phones and watches for kids that have no internet browser or social media apps. The Utah County page maps the rest of them along I-15.

Is Salt Lake City good for shipping and distribution?

Nobody moves to Utah for the rail yards. Companies that ship boxes pay attention to them anyway. In March 2018 Governor Gary Herbert signed the law creating the Utah Inland Port Authority, which oversees development in the northwest corner of Salt Lake City. KUER20,21 described an inland port as a rail-oriented logistics hub, and reported that Utah's would work as a foreign-trade zone, where companies can defer tariffs until goods leave.

The authority says the Northwest Quadrant has dual Class I rail service from Union Pacific and BNSF, and sits within an 18 hour truck trip of key West Coast ports and 80 million consumers.

The gear companies found this out early. When Amer Sports set up its American winter and outdoor business in Ogden, Mike Dowse, who ran it, said that being "in the heart of the Rocky Mountains" would keep the company close to the consumers of brands like Salomon. In June 2026 SCOTT USA opened its Ogden warehouse to other brands as a third party logistics service.

Small companies lean on the same geography. Utah Trikes keeps its shop in Springville and ships worldwide. It calls itself the number one online trike retailer in the world.

Why do gear companies test their products in Utah?

Because the test site is the commute. In January 2013 Governor Gary Herbert created the Utah Office of Outdoor Recreation, the first office of its kind in the country, and it is now the Division of Outdoor Recreation. The Bureau of Economic Analysis put Utah's outdoor recreation economy at $9.75 billion in value added in 2024, 3.3 percent of state GDP, with 75,182 jobs.

Black Diamond moved here from Ventura, California, in September 1991 to be closer to the Wasatch Mountains, and a string of European brands followed it to the Salt Lake Valley and Park City. We traced that history in why so many outdoor companies are in Utah.

What are the downsides of starting a business in Utah?

Housing comes first. The Kem C. Gardner Policy Institute reported in September 2026 that the median sale price across all housing types reached $520,000 in the first quarter, and that buying a median home with 10 percent down takes about $147,000 a year in income. Roughly 91 percent of Utah renters don't earn enough to cover the monthly payment. That is the number your first out-of-state hire will look up, probably before your equity offer.

The air is the second. In a winter inversion, Utah's Department of Environmental Quality explains, cold air and pollution get trapped under a layer of warmer air. The mountains around the Salt Lake Valley hold that cold pool in place. On January 13, 2026, IQAir data showed Salt Lake City with the worst air quality in the United States. That trapped air is the bowl effect the U.S. News editor was talking about.

Water is the long question. The Great Salt Lake hit its lowest average daily level on record in November 2022, 4,188.5 feet, against a historic average of about 4,200. Nothing about that changes next quarter's shipping costs. It is still worth knowing before you sign a 20 year lease.

Companies keep doing this math and landing here anyway. LOWA's American office arrived from Connecticut in May 2026, four months after that January inversion, and moved in with Tecnica Group in Salt Lake City. If you are on the buying side instead, we wrote about what your money does at a Utah brand. The map shows every company in this directory by town, and Utah brands by the numbers counts them by county and founding year.
