Control4 is a consumer tech brand founded in Salt Lake City, Utah, in 2003.
In 2014 Control4 paid $882,246 for Extra Vegetables, an English company best known for writing integration modules and drivers for Control4 systems. Control4 had bought the people who were improving Control4 from the outside. Started in Salt Lake City in 2003, the company makes controllers and software that let a home's lights and speakers take orders from one app.
Will West and Eric Smith had already built PHAST, a home control system AMX bought in 1997, then started over with Mark Morgan. The pitch was price. In 2005 a Home Theater Controller with remote started at $599, and lighting control added as little as $99 a dimmer.
Control4 went public in 2013 and merged with SnapAV in 2019 to form Snap One. After Snap One's 2024 sale to Resideo, Control4 now belongs to ADI Global Distribution of Melville, New York, which Resideo spun off in August 2026. Since 2023 Control4's Utah base has been a five-story Lehi building with an anechoic chamber for testing. By 2024 about 12,000 authorized dealers were managing more than half a million homes on the system, and most of us still get up to flip the switch.
In April 2005 Control4 became the first company to ship wireless products built on Zigbee, the 802.15.4 standard.
