South Jordan, UtahFounded 1969

Cricut is a consumer tech brand founded in Provo, Utah, in 1969. It is headquartered in South Jordan, Utah.

Nearly 5.9 million people cut something on a Cricut machine in 2025, and about 23 percent of Cricut's users make projects to sell. The company's annual report calls it a shift in production "from factory floors to kitchen tables." Cricut is public now and run from South Jordan. It began in Provo in 1969 as a craft business called Provo Craft & Novelty.

By 1995 it had 275 employees, and its CEO, cofounder Robert Workman, listed his first real job as custodian at a newspaper. The first Cricut arrived in 2005. It cut shapes up to 6 by 12 inches from designs stored on cartridges, and in 2006 it pushed Provo Craft to the best sales year in its history.

A Cricut is a computer-controlled cutting plotter built for home crafters, and the Maker line cuts softwood and engraves metal. Three contract manufacturers build the machines in Malaysia.

The company renamed itself Cricut, Inc. in March 2018 and went public three years later. The 2005 machine topped out at 6 by 12 inches. The Venture, the wide-format model, cuts material 24 inches wide and up to 75 feet long, which is more than most kitchen tables can hold.

Fun fact

Cricut's 2025 annual report says 94 percent of its users identify as women.

I don't own one yet, but all my friends do. Everyone seems to want one.
