GOODE is a ski and snowboard brand headquartered in Ogden, Utah. It was founded in Waterford, Michigan, in 1975.
Most of us have wrestled a pair of skis across a parking lot. GOODE, now run from Ogden, started with a ski carrier called the Racer Spacer. Dave Goode was skiing with the U.S. Ski Team at 19 when an ankle injury ended his racing career, and the next year, 1975, he started the company in Waterford, Michigan.
Then he went after the aluminum pole. Goode patented a method for making carbon composite ski poles in 1989, and a longtime business associate estimated that his company held about 80 percent of the carbon pole market. Athletes on Goode slalom skis held numerous world records. In 2018 Goode himself won his age group in the U.S. Alpine Masters Speed Series, which is more than anyone at this desk can say.
He moved the company to Ogden in 2004 and brought snow ski production there from China in 2011. Dave Goode died on January 15, 2020, when the Cessna he was piloting crashed in Roy. Chris Roberts, a longtime colleague, bought the company in 2023. It still sells carbon pencil poles and slalom skis from Wall Avenue, in the city Goode chose for being close to snow and water skiing alike.
Ogden granted GOODE a free 30-year lease on the city's 21st Street Pond in 2008, on the condition that the company keep its headquarters in town and use the pond for research.
The OG bright yellow carbon poles. Good people, and a brand that has been around forever.
