KAL is a supplement brand headquartered in Salt Lake City, Utah. It was founded in 1932.
KAL says it introduced the first multivitamin and the first calcium powder, which is a lot of history to fit under the words "Since 1932" on a bottle. The brand began in Southern California and was a founding member of the National Nutritional Foods Association, now the Natural Products Association. Today KAL is run from Salt Lake City, and the company says its products are made in its own facility in Utah.
The move to Utah came through a roll-up. In 1993 Bain Capital and a group of managers organized Nutraceutical, a Park City company built to consolidate a fragmented supplement industry, and its first purchase was Solaray of Ogden, which had been putting herbs in capsules since 1973. In January 1995 Nutraceutical bought the California-based Makers of KAL.
KAL had switched from powders to tablets soon after its start, according to a company history, and it later sold Beyond Garlic, which Nutraceutical called the first enteric coated garlic softgel. The newer lines lean away from the plain tablet. ActivMelt tablets dissolve in the mouth, and liquid DropIns go into a drink. There is also a children's line called Dinosaurs.
KAL is one brand among many at Better Being Co., the new name for Nutraceutical, which also owns Solaray and Heritage Store. The private equity firm HGGC took Nutraceutical private in 2017 for $446 million. The parent employs more than 800 people and does its manufacturing in house at a 650,000 square foot facility, New Hope Network reported in 2025.
The company's FAQ credits Utah for the staff's interest in health, pointing to the nearby skiing and mountain biking. The best sellers page today leads with magnesium, in five forms, which would have taken some explaining in 1932.
KAL says its ActivTab tablets are made to break down within 30 minutes under USP guidelines.
