Keto Chow is a supplement brand founded in Utah in 2015. It is headquartered in Draper, Utah.
For 100 days in 2019, Chris Bair ate nothing but Keto Chow, roughly 300 meals, and spent the last eight weeks testing fats. He started at 244.016 pounds and finished at 200.107. Keto Chow, which he runs with Miriam Bair from Draper, published both numbers, decimals included, and declared butter the winner.
The Bairs first met the ketogenic diet as a treatment for their son's seizures. Years later they came back to keto for their own health. The chopping and sauteing took too long, so they made a shake. In 2015 the Los Angeles Times called Chris a Utah software engineer making and selling Keto Chow in his spare time.
The original recipe is still posted for free. Bair's reasons, in writing: it "makes me look cool," and hiding a recipe built from other people's open recipes would be "kinda a jerk thing to do." Making the current formula at home, he says, would mean buying 130 years' worth of vitamins.
The experiment had two participants, the founder and one volunteer customer, so it counts as a field report. The powder is made in Spanish Fork, where somebody else buys the vitamins.
At one point the most popular recipe on the DIY Soylent site was Keto Chow 1.5.0, according to Vice.
