ThermoWorks is a kitchen and grill brand founded in Utah in 1997. It is headquartered in American Fork, Utah.
By 2016 home cooks were buying two thirds of everything ThermoWorks sold, and founder Randy Owen told Utah Business that "our market with home cooks was accidental." The American Fork company's gear was in chains like Starbucks and Olive Garden, and he said consumers began seeking it out after meeting it there.
Randy and Suzette Owen started ThermoWorks in 1997 in a basement with two employees. The company outgrew a building roughly every five years, and in 2015 it left Lindon for an 80,000 square foot headquarters in American Fork, with a test kitchen and a warehouse that can ship 5,000 packages a day.
The Thermapen, the thermometer most people picture when they hear ThermoWorks, is not built in Utah. ETI, a family company in Worthing, England, invented it in 1992 and still builds every version there, though ThermoWorks has helped shape the design since the second generation. The company says its A2LA accredited lab tests every new product against a super thermometer precise to within 0.000027 degrees Fahrenheit, which is a lot of decimal places to point at a pork shoulder.
The Thermapen Mk4 had no power button, since opening the probe turned it on, and it read temperatures from minus 58 to 572 degrees Fahrenheit.
