Malouf is a home and furniture brand founded in Logan, Utah, in 2003.
For a while, Malouf's inventory had the better bedroom. Sam and Kacie Malouf stored sheets in their two-bedroom apartment until the stock took the bigger room, and their king bed barely fit in the other. Sam has written that they had to leap in from the foot, with no room around the sides. The Logan company they started in 2003 had about 1,600 employees by 2022.
Kacie was working at a Logan buffet, and Sam was studying accounting at Utah State, when she found out he still slept on sheets from a garage sale in Mexico. He maintains he got a great deal. At a Downeast tent sale they found a king-size Stearns and Foster mattress, "with only minor damage," for $75. Then they priced king sheets.
They funded the business with around 100 zero-interest credit cards, nearly $2 million in all. The couple advise nobody to try it. Malouf says all its mattress manufacturing moved to the United States by January 2025. In January 2026 it formed a joint venture with Sinomax USA, with Sam still CEO.
In 2020 Malouf bought Downeast, the Utah retailer whose tent sale sold the couple that $75 mattress.
For years Malouf shipped its sheets in boxes from the liquor store, which saved hundreds of dollars and meant early customers got their bedding in wine boxes.
