ZAGG is a consumer tech brand founded in Salt Lake City, Utah, in 2005. It is headquartered in Midvale, Utah.
The first InvisibleShields sold faster than ZAGG could make them, so the company enlisted a local youth group to help cut and ship them. Their film was first made to protect the leading edges of military helicopter rotor blades. Phillip Chipping found it in 2005 while trying to keep scratches off a watch he had been given. The company started that March in Salt Lake City.
An October 2005 consulting deal paid Robert G. Pedersen II's firm $85,000 and gave it the right to buy half the company for $25,000. Pedersen became CEO, and in 2007 the company became ZAGG through a merger with an inactive public shell called Amerasia Khan Enterprises. Its 2011 website said the letters stood for Zealous About Great Gadgets. It also offered "when others zig, we ZAGG."
The shield came with a lifetime replacement guarantee. A 2007 SEC filing noted that ZAGG did not own the rights to the film itself, only its cut designs and cutting process. An entity controlled by Evercel took the company private in February 2021, and ZAGG is run from Midvale now. By early 2013 it offered more than 5,900 precut designs. The first one was for a wristwatch.
By ZAGG's own counts, the InvisibleShield went from 200,000 sold in its first two years to more than 7 million by 2011.
