Thirteen brands on this list, founded from 1892 to 2016. The Salt Lake Valley has the most of them, with 6.
Several of the oldest sweets makers in Utah are still working in the valleys where they started. Sweet Candy began in Portland, Oregon, in 1892, moved to Salt Lake City in 1900 and still makes its candy at its Salt Lake City factory. Taffy Town began as the Glade Candy Co. in 1916 and now makes taffy in West Jordan, with pickle on the flavor list.
Up north, Bluebird Candy opened in Logan in 1914, and Idle Isle opened in Brigham City in 1921 after a naming contest paid the winner $10. Ice cream keeps the same calendar. Casper Merrill made his first nut sundaes on a stick in a ten-gallon milk can in Richmond in 1925, the bar sold today as the FatBoy. Utah State University's creamery in Logan began selling Aggie Ice Cream in 1922.
The newer makers work in smaller batches. Amano, in Orem, was the first American chocolate maker to use the rare Chuao cacao bean from Venezuela, and Ritual, which started in Boulder, Colorado, in 2010, makes its chocolate in Heber City. A few names here are run from Utah and make their sweets somewhere else, so check the Made row on a brand page before calling a box local.
